Edmonton City Council, in the Canadian province of Alberta, voted on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, against a proposal to eliminate the fee on paper bags used in restaurants and stores, by a narrow margin of 7 votes to 6.

Under the decision, the fee on paper bags, which is no less than 25 cents per bag, will remain in place.

According to city data, waste associated with single-use items has fallen by about 30% since the regulations took effect in 2023.

The decision drew mixed reactions. Supporters say the fee encourages waste reduction and protects the environment, while opponents argue it adds a financial burden on consumers, particularly low-income households.
