Mezzeh – Damascus | Syria
Activists on social media have circulated a video clip showing a physical assault on people in a street in the Mezzeh district of the Syrian capital, Damascus, amid accounts alleging the involvement of individuals believed to be members of an official's security detail.
According to the circulating information, the incident began with a verbal altercation between the two sides before escalating into a beating of members of a family in the street, near a four-wheel-drive vehicle that those who shared the clip described as a "Tomahawk."
The footage caused concern and resentment, amid fears of continuing security lawlessness and the absence of effective protection for civilians, as well as questions about abuses by gunmen or security escorts suspected of exploiting their ties to officials.
The incident once again highlights the need to rein in the conduct of armed groups and security escorts, prevent the use of influence or weapons to assault citizens, and ensure that all parties are subject to legal accountability without exception.
