Damascus – Syria | October 22, 2026
Reports have circulated claiming that Israeli warplanes flew over the Presidential Palace in the Syrian capital, Damascus, amid claims that these movements are intended to provoke Ahmed al-Jolani and push him into a hasty military decision that Israel could use as a pretext to expand its operations against Syria.
According to sources described as informed, the aircraft flew at low altitudes and repeatedly passed along routes close to the Presidential Palace, a move the sources interpreted as a military and political message aimed at embarrassing the Syrian leadership and exposing its weak ability to protect its airspace, particularly over the presidential headquarters.
An attempt to draw out air defenses?
The sources suggest that the possible Israeli aim is to push Syrian air defenses into firing on the aircraft, allowing Tel Aviv to portray any interception attempt as a threat to its security and to use that as justification for carrying out broader strikes against Syrian military facilities and sovereign institutions.
The reports also spoke of alleged instructions to the units tasked with protecting the Presidential Palace not to engage the aircraft without direct orders, while continuing to monitor air movements and raising readiness levels.
Al-Jolani faces escalation calculations
According to this account, the alleged Israeli movements place al-Jolani before two difficult options: avoiding a military response, with the domestic criticism that may accompany it over the violation of Syrian airspace, or responding and risking a wider military escalation.
Verification and responsibility
HANZALA was unable to independently verify the aircraft's flight paths or altitudes, or the instructions attributed to the Presidential Palace guard.
Nor has it been independently established that the Israeli aim is to provoke al-Jolani or lure Syrian defenses into engagement; these interpretations remain attributed to the sources that reported them.
The report once again highlights the issue of Syrian air sovereignty and the risks that could arise from any new military confrontation over residential areas and government institutions.
