Jordan's Public Security Directorate announced the arrest of the three people it says carried out the armed attack that targeted mourners during a funeral service at a church in the village of Hmoud in Karak Governorate, following a joint security operation carried out by the relevant agencies.
Details of the security operation
According to the Public Security statement, security teams located the suspects inside an abandoned house in Karak Governorate before carrying out a raid to arrest them.
The statement added that the gunmen refused to surrender and opened fire on the security force, leading to an armed clash that ended with the three people wounded and arrested.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were recorded among members of the security force involved in the operation.
They also announced the seizure of firearms and ammunition in the possession of those arrested.
A significant development in the funeral attack case
The announcement follows the attack that targeted mourners in the village of Hmoud on Friday, October 23, which, according to the latest published tolls, killed nine people and injured dozens.
The attack caused widespread shock in Jordan, amid calls to uncover its circumstances and identify those responsible.
The investigation is not over
Despite the announcement of the arrest of the direct perpetrators, important questions remain about the motives for the attack, why this particular funeral was chosen, and whether those arrested acted independently or in coordination with other parties.
Authorities have not yet announced any evidence proving that an external party was behind the attack.
The arrest of the suspects represents a significant development in the investigation, but it does not settle all the circumstances or potential responsibilities.
⚖️ Legal note: The three people are accused of carrying out the attack according to the statement of Jordan's Public Security Directorate, and their responsibility has not been established by a final court ruling.
