Karak Governorate in southern Jordan witnessed an armed attack targeting participants in a funeral service inside Hammoud Church, killing 6 people and injuring 28 others, according to the toll announced by Jordan's Public Security Directorate.
According to testimonies and media reports, gunmen opened fire on the mourners after arriving near the church in a vehicle. The shooting continued for several minutes, causing panic and leaving a number of casualties.
Jordanian security services launched operations to pursue the suspects, while the injured were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Jordan's King Abdullah II condemned the attack and pledged to hold those responsible accountable.
Authorities have not yet announced the identity of the perpetrators or their motives, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
⚠️ Initial reports had spoken of 7 killed and 10 injured before the updated official toll was released.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the circumstances of the attack and determine responsibility.
