The towns of Trappes and La Verrière, west of the French capital Paris, were the scene of an armed attack after a man opened fire from inside a car on people at several locations, killing one person and injuring at least four others, including a 12-year-old girl.

According to French authorities, the suspect used an automatic weapon and fired several bursts near a petrol station, a medical centre and a children's play area before police were able to arrest him.

The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office announced it had taken charge of the investigation into the attack, amid suspicions of racist or religious motives.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the incident as a terrorist crime, while the mayor of Trappes, Ali Rabeh, said the attack may have been driven by racial hatred and anti-Muslim sentiment.

The mayor warned against rhetoric that blames immigrants for France's problems, saying that ideological incitement could help encourage acts of violence.

Authorities are still investigating the suspect's motives, and no final judicial ruling has been issued regarding the terrorist classification or a racist motive.

The incident comes amid rising social and political tensions in France and heated debates over immigration, security and racist rhetoric.
