🇨🇦 Edmonton – Alberta | October 26, 2026
The City of Edmonton is facing a growing problem due to the theft of copper wire from streetlight poles and telecommunications facilities, which has caused lighting outages on some streets and in residential neighbourhoods.
According to local reports, the thefts have affected areas including Groat Estate, Westmount and Glenora, causing damage to infrastructure and delaying repairs.
The City of Edmonton said it is working to curb the problem by strengthening equipment protection and replacing some copper wiring with aluminum to reduce opportunities for theft.
⚠️ These incidents are raising residents' concerns about street safety at night, especially given the presence of exposed electrical wires that could pose a danger to pedestrians.
