🇨🇦 Wainwright – Alberta | October 17, 2026

Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed deaths and injuries resulting from a serious incident inside Canadian Forces Base CFB Wainwright, southeast of the city of Edmonton, followed by the outbreak of a large fire that spread beyond the boundaries of the military facility.

The minister explained that the situation remains sensitive, and that the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are involved in responding to the incident and investigating its circumstances, in coordination with local and provincial authorities.

🔥 Fire spreads beyond the military base

Local authorities confirmed that strong winds contributed to the rapid spread of the flames, which crossed the fence surrounding the base into areas belonging to the Municipality of Wainwright.

The emergency response was concentrated in the area south of Township Road 44-0, with the participation of fire and rescue crews from several areas.

🚨 Warnings to residents

According to the latest official information available Saturday evening, there were no general evacuation orders in effect, but authorities urged residents to stay away from the area and keep roads clear for ambulances and emergency crews.

Residents were also asked to avoid going to the Wainwright Health Centre except for necessary medical cases.

⚠️ Casualty toll and cause of the incident

Despite the official confirmation of deaths and injuries, the defence minister did not announce final casualty figures.

Authorities also have not confirmed the cause of the incident, while circulating accounts of an explosion during a military training exercise remain officially unconfirmed.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that the federal government is working in coordination with the Government of Alberta and local authorities to monitor the situation.

Developments on the ground continue to be followed pending an official announcement clarifying the circumstances of the incident and the casualty toll.
