🇨🇦 Wainwright – Alberta | October 18, 2026
Canadian authorities announced that four military personnel were killed and 39 people were injured, at least 19 of them in critical condition, after a massive fire swept through a training area inside CFB Wainwright military base in the province of Alberta on Saturday, October 17.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the deaths of four military personnel, while Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced that 39 injured people were taken to hospitals, some of them suffering severe burns requiring intensive treatment.
🔥 How did the disaster happen?
Brigadier-General Wade Rutland, commander of 1st Canadian Division, explained that the incident occurred during live-fire military exercises involving soldiers who were preparing for a deployment mission in Latvia.
According to the military briefing, a grass fire broke out inside the training area, before strong winds and a sudden shift in their direction caused the flames to spread with exceptional speed.
Rutland said the flames covered a distance of about one kilometre within 30 to 60 seconds, sweeping through the area where the soldiers were training.
🚑 19 injured in critical condition
Ambulance and emergency teams in Alberta were mobilized, and the injured were transported to hospitals in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Wainwright.
Code Orange medical emergency protocols were activated to deal with the large number of casualties, before the alert was later lifted.
⚠️ Investigations ongoing
The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed there are no indications that the incident was the result of a terrorist act.
However, the exact cause of the fire has not been determined, and the Armed Forces have opened an official investigation to establish its circumstances and review safety procedures during military exercises.
🇨🇦 Canada mourns the victims
Prime Minister Mark Carney described the disaster as one of the worst tragedies the Canadian Armed Forces have suffered on Canadian soil in peacetime, announcing that flags on federal buildings would be lowered to half-mast in mourning for the victims.
Wainwright base is located about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton and is considered one of the most prominent training centres of the Canadian Armed Forces.
